The Museum

Entirely dedicated to Lisbon's urban song, the Fado Museum opened its doors on September 25th, 1998,  celebrating Fado’s exceptional value as an identifying symbol of the City of Lisbon, its deep rooting in the country’s historic and cultural tradition, its role in establishing a cultural identity and its importance as a source of inspiration and inter cultural exchange among peoples and communities.

Apart from its permanent exhibit, the Fado Museum comprises a Documentation Centre, a School (offering Portuguese guitar and singing lessons), a thematic shop, an auditorium with a regular schedule of events and a restaurant/cafeteria area.

Since opening to the public, the Museum has been acquiring items belonging to hundreds of interpreters, artists, composers, musicians, instrument manufacturers, scholars and researchers, professional and amateur artists: hundreds of personalities that witnessed and wrote the history of Fado, and that did not hesitate to cede the testimonial of their affective and memorial patrimony to us, for the construction of a collective project.
